Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s Society

2018 marks the 10th Anniversary of Nouveau Wellbeing! This month we kicked off our celebrations with a Memory Walk in aid of Alzheimer’s Society!

Alzheimer’s Society is a cause close to our hearts. At Nouveau we carry out many Seated Dance and Exercise classes in community centres and care homes alike. The classes are designed to allow older individuals, who might not otherwise exercise, take part, socialise and have fun in a safe way. Because of the nature of this work we often work with class participants who are living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain and causes the degeneration of brain tissue and nerve cells. With less nerve cells present, it becomes harder for the brain to communicate and function properly, which often causes dementia.

Dementia symptoms include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. This can often lead to dementia patients feeling isolated and lonely.

Our team sets out to combat that with our classes and our training as Dementia Friends Champions, but we wanted to help the fight against Alzheimer’s and Dementia even further. It wasn’t hard to find a way in which we could help! A memory walk seemed like the perfect option as it encompasses our values of fitness and wellbeing, as well as helping others in our community.

Our Coffee Afternoon and Memory Walk!

We decided to host a Coffee Afternoon alongside our Memory Walk. This meant that we could raise even more money by selling refreshments and it enabled those who couldn’t walk to still come along and contribute!

The event started at our Head Office in Billingham on Thursday 19th July at 12.30pm. We sold tea, coffee, home made cakes and other refreshments and took any kind donations people could spare. After our refreshments we headed out on a very pleasant 3.5km walk together! It was amazing to see individuals of all abilities taking part and completing the walk. The day was very successful as we managed to raise £223.50 for the cause- with more still being donated!

It was lovely to see some familiar faces (and some new ones too!) coming together to raise awareness and money in the fight against Alzheimer’s and Dementia. All in all it was a really wonderful day and we hope that we can host more in the future!
